Our Program

3rd - 5th Grade Program

Over a period of 10-12 weeks, girls in the 3rd through 5th grade participate in an after-school program like no other. Designed to allow every girl to recognize her inner strength, the Girls on the Run curriculum inspires girls to define their lives on their own terms. Throughout the season, the girls make new friends, build their inner confidence and celebrate all that makes them unique.

The Girls on the Run lessons encourage positive emotional, social, mental and physical development. Participants explore and discuss their own beliefs around experiences and challenges girls face at this age. We start with helping the girls get a better understanding of who they are and what’s important to them. Then, we look at the importance of team work and healthy relationships. And, finally, the girls explore how they can positively connect with and shape the world.

Running is incorporated throughout the curriculum. Physical activity is woven into our program to inspire an appreciation of fitness and to build habits that lead to a lifetime of health. At the end of each three month session, the girls participate in a Girls on the Run 5K event. This celebratory, non-competitive event is the culminating experience of the curriculum. Completing the 5K gives the girls a tangible understanding of the confidence that comes through accomplishment as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals. Crossing the finish line is a defining moment when the girls realize that even the seemingly impossible IS possible.

Meeting twice a week in small teams of 8-15 girls, we teach life skills through dynamic, conversation-based lessons and running games. The 20-24 lesson curriculum is taught by certified Girls on the Run coaches and includes three parts: understanding ourselves, valuing relationships and teamwork and understanding how we connect with and shape the world at large.

Running is used to inspire and motivate girls, encourage lifelong health and fitness, and build confidence through accomplishment. At each season's conclusion, the girls and their running buddies complete a 5K running event. Completing a 5K gives the girls a tangible sense of achievement as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals. The result—making the seemingly impossible, possible and teaching girls that they can.

Fees

Girls on the Run is open to all girls who live in Fond du Lac County regardless of ability to pay. While the actual out-of-pocket cost of the Girls on the Run program is approximately $150 per girl for the twice per week, ten week program, Girls on the Run of Fond du Lac only charges a $60 participation fee. With the registration fee, each child receives the following:

  • A pair of running shoes
  • 20-24 lessons conducted by two certified Girls on the Run coaches
  • An official Girls on the Run T-shirt
  • Participation in a Girls on the Run 5K event
  • A 5K finisher’s medallion

Scholarship assistance may be available to qualifying families unable to pay the full fee.  Girls participate equally in the program regardless of the fee their family pays.  Girls must complete the program to receive all benefits noted above including the shoes.  The financial sustainability of our program depends on the honesty and integrity of parents to choose their appropriate registration amount.  The sliding fee scale below is based on annual family income.  Find the correct number for your household and select the box in that row that represents your household’s annual income from the last year.  Follow that column down to the “Registration Fee” box at the bottom.  Example: a household of 5 family members with an annual income of $40,000 would pay a registration fee of $25.  This information will be collected during the registration process.

Local fund raising efforts and donations help to bridge the gap between program fees paid and necessary sponsorship.  Families that have the ability to and are interested in supporting the program may choose to sponsor additional girls as well.  You may contact Kim Blick at 920-906-6700 ext. 5312 for further scholarship information or to make a donation to support our scholarship fund.
